John Piper on the Dangers of Prosperity

Not that having wealth is inherently evil – it is neutral. The danger is what we tend to do with wealth which turns us away from God.

Our hearts are so bent on comfort and selfish care that most people who obtain great wealth are consumed by it. When we mix Christianity, the gospel with the hope or goal of gaining money and possessions, we often see a lethal loss of gospel truth – and a whoring about after other gods. Check my last post for more on that.

As John Piper so succinctly stated this morning on Twitter:

“When I fed them to the full they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores.” Jer. 5:7

[That’s] One effect of prosperity.

Be careful what you wish for…
